Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarryMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Wow wow wow!! Review to come! Amazing awesome YA book!!
Wow! This is going to be a tough review! I've read some really heavy books lately and am nervous with my review on this one as well. I'm scared I wont be doing this book justice.
This is not your typical YA romance. It definitely touches on deeper issues. Issues no one likes to talk about. Bipolar disease and foster care are the 2 main ones.
Echo and Noah meet in the counselor's office. Kudos to Mrs Collins. Such an amazing clinical counselor and mentor for these two! I don't typically read excerpts of the books I read next and didn't with this one, so I had no idea what I was getting into. Had no idea, it was a YA or what 'issues' were at hand - I think it made the book so much better. No expectations. Echo and Noah expected life to turn out a certain way and it didn't. I had no expectations with this book and it blew my mind. I didn't have family die in Afghanistan, but my husband is military so my heart hurt for Echo. Also, my mother is bipolar, but thankfully I didn't have to go through the hell Echo did with her mother.
I definitely empathized with these characters more than I thought I would. Granted, Noah - I could understand, but I could never put myself in his shoes - there was just no way. I empathized, but only so much that my brain could. Noah was/is an amazing friend/boyfriend/brother etc. I loved how this book wasn't all sex and love. It had issues and these kids dealt with these issues-together and then fell in love along the way.
I loved Noah's friends way more than Echo's friends and hope/can't wait for their stories!!
